During my free time, or when I want to reflect on my life experiences, I write poems. After revisions and editing, I sometimes publish them on Wattpad. Here is one of them.
A World of Lies
Sometimes I lie down
Telling myself white lies
Where white lives don't matter as much
Where black lies above white
My lies
So rich...like the land my elders labored on
So I could grow
For a little while,
I lie
And when I do so I don't have to cry
I don't have to face faces that fake smiles
Or that don't care for the existence of my people
Because apparently we are not the same...people
They live on the other side of the fence
Hence the pigment of my pride
That they ride
So gladly into the next A train
But with these words
I, a silenced soul, I reign
In a kingdom of lions to be tamed
Yet little hummingbirds to be blamed
Please explain
.....Why?
In my world of lies I don't have to threaten you with my black magic
To show you that I can fight harder than my kinky curls do to any comb
Or that I can use my confidence to show you that I don't need a big ego to think I'm important
My soul is already gold
West Africa imported
I can use my lips to speak whether or not spoken to
I can raise my voice so you can hear that I sing solo beautifully in this world
Full of instrumental ideals
I can choose to be bold
In this world the Truth is I don’t have to ask ain’t I a woman...too
I can hope that maybe one day...
You'll choose to accept me
In this lie
In this surreal world of mine
I remain
Because there is all of that
But in my truth,
In reality...
There is none of that
